How many readers love the idea of RyanO<\/a> and the two Jeffs<\/a> assembling their analyses to submit a comment to Nature? How many love the notion of me assembling a paper and submitting to a Journal? Probably several of you do. <\/p>\n

The problem<\/h3>\n

How many of those same people like the notion that publication of said papers might easily cost us thousands<\/i> of dollars? Believe it or not, the charge for a 2 journal-page article with one color figure appearing in print in GRL is roughly $1376. <\/p>\n

How do I know this? I ran the page charge calculator at AGU<\/a><\/p>\n

You can use the tool too. When you do, be sure to save your word document as a pdf. Also, don’t be surprised by the “compression factor”. A two-page journal article will be much, much longer when typed double spaced in Word. <\/p>\n

Mind you: It may be possible to lower the charges by:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Asking the Journal to waive the fee for the text based on lack of funding. That would eliminate $427 from the cost. <\/li>\n
  2. Maybe<\/i>, one can substitute a black and white figures for the print version while including color for the online material. That would knock out the $700. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Using both these strategies, the price of publication would be nominal. Obviously, if the technical argument can be advanced using black and white figures, it’s worth submitting color figures for the online publication and black and white versions for the dead tree publication. I can do that for most things I present. But I don’t think this would be very effective for RyanO & 2 Jeff’s presentation which relies heavily on color graphics. <\/p>\n

    Failure to publish important work in Journals is a big talking point in the “blog climate wars”. Moreover, it also prevents people from having their arguments covered by the media, or getting wider recognition. So, it would be good to publish those analyses that are worthy. <\/p>\n

    However, the mere concern over having to spend some unknown, possibly large, amount of money in the event a paper is accepted is<\/i> an impediment to preparing articles to submit to the more prestigious dead tree journals. Obviously spending after tax money to see our ideas in print is a particular problem for people who do not get raises or promotions based on the number of journal articles they write each year and whose employers do not value publications. <\/p>\n

    Proposal<\/h3>\n

    I’d like to make simple proposal for readers to float around the blogosphere: We need to either create or identify some sort of fund that authors could solicit to cover page charges should they arise and we find we cannot get the fees waived. So:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. If anyone knows of an private or public groups that will cover page charges, let us all know.<\/li>\n
    2. If anyone is the kind of person who knows how to create such a ‘think-tankish’ group with such a fund, let us know. <\/li>\n
    3. If anyone is cozy enough with their Congressional Rep to propose a government fund, call him up and propose one. (I would suggest those with Reps on the Energy and Congress committee should contact their reps and suggest such a fund is needed for papers in the area of climate. The fund should specifically exclude<\/i> those whose salaries are paid out of any grant or contract focused on climate research, as their research grants should cover their publication fees.     4. I propose that Canadians should be permitted to apply. Guess why? \ud83d\ude42 <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Obviously, the existence of a fund would not result in any publications if no-one submitts anything. But, I think knowledge that such a fund would exist could help those of us who would like to put together articles without worrying about the potential financial liability if the paper is accepted.<\/p>\n
