They linked Michael Tobis twice;
Traffic exploded.
I was visiting Only In It For the Gold where Michael Tobis mentioned Climate Depot drove lots of traffic. Someone asked, “How much?” Michael answered,
“About 25 visitors an hour this afternoon, mostly first-timers, coming from Morano.
I’m sure he’d like someone for an archrival and there would be benefits. It’s tempting. But I’m not actually interested in that sort of conversation.”
MT’s suggestion that one might attract Climate Depot traffic intrigued me. So, I dashed over to Climate Depot to see what sort of content MM links. Government reports. Newspaper articles. Not so many blogs. . .
Then, I saw something that turned me green with envy! Mark Morano linked MT again!

But then I thought, “Maybe Morano’s linked me but I didn’t notice.” So, I checked my google-analytics stats and saw that The Climate Depot must have linked to me some time around June 17, 2009 because on that day, 545 visitors arrived from The Climate Depot. That’s about 50% of my normal daily visitors (who average 2.35 page views.) Clearly, if I want to get Anthony Watts type traffic, I need to get The Climate Depot to link me regularly.
But how?
I have no idea what Climate Depot linked. Mark seems to like to link posts discussing cool weather. Maybe he linked Cool Spring Haiku? If so, I’ll just have to wait for a coolish day and write a haiku complaining that my tomatoes aren’t ripe yet. Traditionally, our first tomatoes ripen on the 4th of July so this is hardly a sign of excess coolth.
Oh well.
Pardon me, but to get “Anthony Watts type traffic” you need to get Anthony Watts to link to you.
Go ahead, make my day 😉
Anthony,
I meant to get the sort of traffic you get. I can definitely report that a link from WUWT also results in tons of traffic. On the other hand, the infrequent links form RC…. a trickle!
Well, my first ripening tomato is just turning pink now. But it’s in an awful location and I don’t have enough data for a pattern yet.
Would salad recipes drive traffic, or only drive the ad matcher nuts?
Shucks, I can’t help it. I see what you mean though about RC.

But send be a note when you post something interesting, and I’ll send some traffic your way. – Anthony
Lucia: Go to Climate Depot. Move your curser down the left column and a link to your site under a title ” Climate report Shows Surface Temperatures Lower Than Expected…” It is about 2/3 of the way down, to the left and above a photo of 2 cops arresting some skeptic… With my browser, Safari, as I scroll down it shows site links. Maybe explorer does too so it only took me 10 seconds to find the link to your site
As Examiner.com doesn’t show journalists referrers, I can’t speak to who drives what. I would note that the small size of the community and the specificity of the topic makes it more difficult to tease out the primary drivers. On the occasions I make it into Climate Depot, I have also been linked to by other sites, including both of you. When general interest has led me to Climate Depot, it is often after finding information on third party sites.
Do you use Google Trends to see what the available universe of traffic is? I keep meaning to, but never seem to get around to it.
Tom–
I haven’t investigated my traffic sources in detail– but most is “direct”. That is, people who like visiting just use bookmarks in their browser or type in the address.
