I noticed this “interesting” name for a commenter posting over at The Volokh Conspiracy: Please stop banning TtheCO:.

Some of you may be aware that TCO who haunts many climate blogs has expressed great admiration for The Volokh Conspiracy. At Air Vent, he criticized CA and Heartland for not being of Volokh quality, and also told us he thinks the guys at VC are smarter than the ones at RC.

I love reading VC. Now that I think of it, I hadn’t seen any comments from TCO lately. I’ve now developed a theory for their absence.

  1. I’ve noticed posts from TCO over at Air Vent recently. Must be behaving himself there (for the time being at least.)

    A blog addict has to comment somewhere. If VC banned him, the number of blogs he reads that also permit him to post is dropping.

    RealClimate, Climate Progress, sometimes Tamino.

  4. Jeff Id has massive patience. I’ve heard that TCO is taking a sabbatical from blogging, but it may be disinformation from a sock puppet. When he’s good, he’s very, very good, but when he is bad he is awful.

  5. MikeN–Those are blogs that have reputations for moderating dissent out of existence. A poster has to be truly obnoxious to be banned at The Volokh Conspiray.

    Kim– Yes. The problem with TCO is when he’s bad, he’s awful. If Jeff Id were self hosted, I’d lend him my troll plugin. It lets you moderate select people.

  7. Yea, searching on Google for his posts at Volokh, I don’t notice anything. Perhaps the bad ones were deleted. His last post is September.

  9. Looks like you have just given TCO an invite to revisit! Not sure there is enough signal within the noise these days to make it worth the disruption.

    When he first started posting at CA he was a lot better except when he was drunk. I remember someone teasing him that he was commenting on every CA post but that he had missed one and he had to find out which one. There are a lot of posts at CA!

    My initial reaction was could this be TCO? However some of the later posts are rather more coherent than I would expect from TCO so it may be someone with a similar technical viewpoint and ability to question. He raised the kind of sharp questions that I like to see because it forces people like Ryan O, JeffID and Steve M to be a bit more defensive and revisit and justify their own position. If TCO did more of this and less of the rudeness and provocation then I would be more happy to read what he has to say. Currently his posts at the AirVent are a reason not to visit.

    TCO has always been able to post here. However, I wrote a plugin to moderate his posts so I can check them for foul language, off-color comments and general nastiness. If he behaved long enough, I’d unmoderate him. But, when informed that he had been put on the list of the few who are automatically moderated, he went away.

    With respect to TCO’s observations, every now and then he raises sharp questions. But often, they only sound sharp to people who are unfamiliar with the details of what has been posted. His questions or arguments often involve insisting on “facts” which are simply not facts. Overall I consider him to be a waste of time.

    Most bloggers are content for TCO to stay away from their blogs. However, I rarely ban anyone outright.

    It became pretty obvious that he was criticizing dishonestly to make a stink and give the appearance of serious technical questions. People were legitimately confused by his words and he seemed to revel in it. First wordpress started moderating for me – which he blamed Lucia for calling her a little minx. Now he’s going into moderation which pissed him off and I received several nice messages.

    I don’t enjoy it when everyone agrees on blogs but dishonest criticism is like graffiti and until he finds his mojo, his posts pass through moderation.

    I still hold the record for snips on the air vent but TCO is catching up.

    How could I be to blame for wordpress moderating TCO? I don’t control wordpress!

    Yep. The only thing to do with TCO is to moderate him until he proves he’s willing to behave. Otherwise, you wake up in the morning to troll eruptions. It’s no fun.

  14. I have no clue how you could fix all of wordpress, but the minx comment cracked me up. He’s made me laugh a few times, that was one where I wasn’t sure if he was serious or not and either way it was funny. I think Lucia troll control rev2 impressed him.

    I really lost my patients with this guy. he hasn’t even read the paper and doesn’t know that Steig won’t provide the data. I left a comment about the few hundred scripts on the air vent which should help him out.

    Wow. Gotta watch that blood pressure.

    Ask TCO to do you a favor: write Steig and ask for link to the data. After all, if TCO asks,Steig has to provide it, right? 🙂

  17. Lucia, TCO has another message on Air Vent questioning your conclusions regarding the AR4 projections. I suspect you’ve already seen it.

    Did you really lose your patients over this guy? For sure, characters like TCO can take a heavy toll on everyone’s patience, but losing patients is really intolerable.

    I have seen him all over the internet.In everyplace he goes he wears out his usefulness,because he is a drama queen.

    The smart thing to do is ban him to make a statement that his b.s. is not acceptable.Why do you people continue to moderate this gasbag?

  22. Sunsettommy– I mostly just got a kick out of the notion that he might even have gotten himself banned from a low-moderation, freewheeling law blog!
