Ok, Lucia. I didn’t know about this when I wrote my last post.
In no way did I mean to suggest than any pending legal action against Punxsutawney Phil was representative of any potential legal action against Lewandowsky.
They are, in fact, different animals.
That was funny.I wouldn’t be surprised if Phil has been more accurate than meteorologists over the years.I hope they have given Chuckeye Buck protection.
Yeah . . . this time last year I was in the garden and thinking about opening the pool.
There’s usually a good reason why we kill rodents . . . just say’n.
RE: ” . . .and thinking about opening the pool. ”
My apologies for lack of reference in previous post. It’s been a long cold winter here this year and we’re not expecting >0 C until at least April. Our Wiarton Willie was just as deceptive as Punk Phil.
Altho I’ve been mislead before . . . IE: it’s going to get warmer every year. Perhaps I was hoping I wouldn’t have to move to Florida when I retire (retire? as if).
As for the rodents; shoot ’em both. I’m freeze’n.
barn E.
I’ve never understood Phil predictions anyway. Is 6 more weeks of winter after Feb 2 would be an early spring…. right? Otherwise normally it’s 12… right?
According to the tradition, if Phil sees his shadow and returns to his hole, he has predicted six more weeks of winter-like weather. If Phil does not see his shadow, he has predicted an “early spring.”
I dont know whos responsible for the March winter in Denmark but I hate it and my Sarracenias are freeze drying aarrgh
Lol. And a tip of the hat to meteorologist Joe Bastardi, who predicted this freeze from early on and was promptly dismissed on some sites for wanting cold weather just to annoy the warmists!

It’s a CONSPIRACY!!
Obviously Punxsutawney Phil and Shubenacadie Sam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shubenacadie_Sam) are in cahoots. This is evident on it’s face. Does anybody know the name “Lewandowsky”? I just got an email.
Aj – Maybe. Or maybe you’re part of the conspiracy to cover up the REAL conspiracy by distracting with the Phil conspiracy. Or is it that I’m part of the conspiracy to make folks think you’re part of the conspiracy to make people think there’s a conspiracy about Phil to cover up the true conspiracy? BTW, for all quote mining / future psych survey purposes, let me add that I am voluntarily self identifying a’s a bot.
HaroldW–
I know that’s what they say, but it doesn’t make sense only 6 weeks of winter after Feb 2 is short. It doesn’t matter when they say spring is…. we get snow in late March frequently!
Lucia
we get snow in late March frequently!
You may!, in England significant snow in March is unusual, disruptive snow affecting large parts of the country is highly unusual
hadCET for March 2013 is projected to be the coldest (3.7degC) for more than 40 years ranking 51st in the entire 355 year CET record! The 12 month moving annual hadCET including March is projected to show a negative anomaly of 0.2degC (1961-1990 base period), the last time CET anomaly was negative was 2010, before that there were 13 years of positive anomalies!
tolerance = 0.1 # set to 0.0001 to get “infinite recursion” error
is_it_a_conspiracy = function(){

}
This charge is just harassment by the spring denialists who are funded by the Big Winter Sports and Snow Shovel Makers. Multiple GCM’s (Groundhog Climate Models) show that spring has arrived and the cold and snow are just “weather” and a localized phenomena, much as the MWP (Midwestern Warm Period) was earlier in the year.
AJ– Funny. I guess it depends on how many people check out Shubenacadi Sam’s page.
People in Britain are going to be dying of cold this week, thanks to fuel poverty. The smart money is that natural gas supplies to industry will be suspended so that homes can be heated and electricity power stations can be supplied.
Over the next two years more coal fired power stations will be closed. The power companies state they do not know how to invest in new stations because they don’t know the future economics of wind, natural gas, coal and nuclear.
If temperature remain stable or fall over the next five years the people in the UK are going to rebel. There will be a reckoning and the people who produced these predictions of a warming globe, with confidence intervals, will be called to account.
Perhaps Phil started running GCM codes in his borough.
Sean,
The WSJ suggested that if they find a stash of emails in Phil burrow, things could become complicated.
It’s less risky to predict earthquakes in Italy than spring in Pennsylvania.
Summer continues here in Australia too, with Autumn having been postponed a month. Who can I sue?
Chris–
As far as I’m aware, we don’t have any animals that predict the onset of fall. Certainly, none of our professional animal prognosticators predict weather in Australia. But I suspect you could sue Punxsutawney Phil on the theory that our cold weather should have been relayed south to you, but it stayed right here.
Niels A Nielsens: I don’t know who is responsible for the March winter in Denmark but I hate it and my Sarracenias are freeze drying aarrgh.
.
Have you thought about moving to Greenland? It is warming twice as fast as anywhere else on the planet.
Doesn’t the Woolly Bear Caterpillar count as doing something along those lines?
alcuin–
Hmmm… maybe. But I don’t think you can sue a woolly bear caterpillar for merely existing. You certainly can’t sue one for not existing.
Beta Blocker, it’s going to take more than a few doublings of CO2-levels to make that place attractive climatewise. Little more than mosses, grasses and low bushes are struggling to grow there now – no trees. And I think the positive temperature trend in the arctic will reverse when the AMO turns negative which could be soon enough. So no, not an option.
Niels A Nielsen ….. So no, not an option.

Is there some place in Germany, Belgium, or the Netherlands that is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet?

Pretty sure Santa’s been sued before. If what you’re saying is right, he exists.
Wait, I’ve been lied to!?
Carrick–
What I mean is you can sue something that you claim exists. But you can’t actually sue for the offense of “failing to exist”.
Lucia:
But you can’t actually sue for the offense of “failing to existâ€.
That sounds tautological and so is probably right. Pretty sure it’s disappointing news to lawyers though. 😉
It’s Punxsutawney-gate.
There’s a job waiting for Phil in the UK at UEA Climate Research Unit.
If he needs an enquiry to clear him of all misrepresentations, that can be arranged too.

Come on Doc, you know we won’t really. We might moan a lot more about it. Most likely the only effect will be about a 3% swing towards UKIP. But the lunatics will remain in charge, and winter deaths from cold for the poor and elderly will continue upwards.
Definitely an early spring here (Washington). And far too dry. Too little snow. We normally get over five feet, we had less then half of that this winter. Not good.
According to James Annan, the next BEST paper will be
“Rumour has it, their third paper addresses the defecatory habits of ursines in arboreal environments.”
“But you can’t actually sue for the offense of ‘failing to exist’.”
So they just get away with it. Where’s the accountability?

Think of it as super tropospheric cooling in action

Yes sure, but it would be a bit like betting to chase those places, wouldn’t it? And the year to year variability is so large anyway that you get 100 year lows even in a warming world. In Berlin an other german cities it is shivering cold right now http://www.rtl.de/rtl-nachrichtenarchiv/1453248/deutschland-bibbert-weiter-kaelteste-nacht-seit-100-jahren-droht.html
And this

In Denmark it is now max 2C during the day and down to around -10C -12C in the night/morning. That’s very cold for this time of year.
