  1. Yes, best of luck to the Cubs.

All Red Sox fans empathize with Cubs fans. May the burden of perpetual frustration be lifted, as it was in Boston in 2004.

  2. Jim said in the movie “Back to the Future” the went to 2015. Michael J. Fox opened the paper and …. The CUBS won the world series. (The world had truly changed!!)

I don’t think “irony” would be quite the word if that actually happened.

But perhaps we don’t need to worry about global warming. Everyone knows the Cubs winning the world series will only happen when hell freezes over. Hell has got to be close enough to earth to have a cooling effect. . .

  3. Oh–
My sister emailed and said she could hear the crowd singing Go Cubs Go from her house. (She lives nearish Wrigley. But far enough for that to be quite a roar.)

  4. When the Cardinals get eliminated, I become a fan of the team that did it.

    GO CUBS

The wind blowing off the lake. BRRRRR!!!!

  7. Grandma was a life-long Cubs fan. She’d be 106 years old if she were alive today. Too young to have seen the last time the Cubs won the World Series.

Holland did not qualify for the european championship. That’s what the rest of the world is talking about.

May ‘the rest of the world’ live long and prosper, now back to the hopeful Cubbies.

  9. “Cubs vs. Astros.
    You heard it here first.”
And last. If the Mets win tomorrow, then all 4 of my picks will be through this round. Hoping for Cubs vs. Royals.

  10. Hans Erren,

Many Americans, myself included, think watching what you call football is beyond boring. Of course there are also a lot of Americans that think the same thing about baseball.

  11. Hans Erren,
“That’s what the rest of the world is talking about.”
    .
Well, at least the Dutch are talking about it.

  12. My grandfather was a Cubs fan and saw many Cubs pennant winners and 2 World Series winners. As a Cubs fan I have been alive for 1 World Series and 1 pennant appearance.

I consider myself a realistic Cubs fan and as such was not surprised that the Cubs got by the Pirates with Arrieta and the end of season fading Cards, but the Mets and their pitching is a different story. If the Cubs win it will be due to a faster than expected maturity of the Cubs young hitters. I remember 1969 but none of the Cubs players were alive then and that is good.

  13. Kenneth,

but the Mets and their pitching is a different story

I was scarred by the season the Cubs lost to themselves which resulted in Mets ultimately taking the series. The result is a superstition that tells me the Mets will win.

I remember 1969 but none of the Cubs players were alive then and that is good.

That’s what Jim says. But I am scarred. Scarred.

  14. The Cubs young hitters tend to fall off performance wise against really good pitchers. They strike out a lot but do have the advantage of taking pitches and increasing the starting pitchers pitch count. The Mets relief staff is no great shakes – so therein lies hope.

I was out in the woods walking with my grandson this morning and could not resist throwing some walnuts at the tree. Sad what my left arm has deteriorated into. I remember when my grandfather and I played catch in his older years and I thought he threw like a girl even though I was told by others who saw him play in his prime that he and his 4 brothers were excellent ball players. My walnut throwing and previous throwing expeditions in my later years has had great explanatory power.

I must add that throwing like a girl is a very outdated expression. I see girls throw balls today that would impress many of us back in the day.

As a former athlete I recognize that playing a game is a lot less stressful than watching one where there is a personal interest.

  15. Lucia, I was aware of the natural limitations and that is why I did not feel prejudicial in using the term.

Having said that I see girls who throw in the manner of excellent boy throwers. The Little League pitcher of a year ago was a good example. Of course you might ask why old man lose the ability to throw hard. From personal experience I am going with arthritis and lose of muscle. I find if I throw enough even at my age some the speed comes back but the throwing motion is forced. I recall seeing old Hall of Fame Cardinal outfielder, Enos Slaughter, play at an advanced age in old timers games and he appeared able to hit, throw and run like a much younger man – but he was a rare exception.

  16. Lucia..If your not scarred your not a Cubs fan. If you don’t have the feeling of impending doom then your not a Cubs fan. But you also believe in miracles…oh no sorry…. that’s the Mets fans. Good luck Lucia as a Twins fan I will be pulling for the north side this time.

  17. Too bad for the Cubs. Bats and pitching went cold at the same time. They are very close….. if the owners don’t pull the money plug next year.
