  1. Happy Turkey Day Lucia! In honor of your holiday, I just finished an excellent serving of homemade Chicken Pot Pie up here in Canada.

  2. I did something a little different this year. In addition to the normal roasted turkey, I soaked a smaller turkey in a sugar/brine/spices solution for 14 hours, then smoked it for 7 hours (reaching >180F internal temp). Absolutely yummy, and highly recommended if you have a smoker.

  3. SteveF,
    Smoked turkey is great!!
I made apple pie. Jim smoked (on the grill– not the whole 7 hours). His brothers did the rest. It was great.

  4. My daughter who is the designated pumpkin pie chef spent the holiday away at college, so I became the family choice out of desperation. I opted for a “from scratch” recipe online and followed it pretty faithfully, except I used canned pumpkin and pre-made pie crust. Instead of the usual spices it called for cinnamon, ginger, and black molasses. What I served would probably make the foodies cringe, but my nephew had three servings so it was at least good enough for a teenage boy.

  5. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Me and the GF roasted a no-frills 23lb turkey and took it over to my parents. Olive oil rubdown and then 4.5 hrs at 325. Came out really good. She made pies too!

  6. I didn’t even consider the culinary aspect. It just looks creepy to me. I don’t want to reminded of Alien when I sit down to Thanksgiving dinner.

  7. Lucia,

Pretty sure it’s octopus, not squid. And octopus is always pretty tough…. not at all my fave.

  8. Lucia,

    Happy St. Lucia Day!

Good friends of ours are Swedish and are celebrating this evening with a traditional dinner…pretty sure it’s not take out from IKEA.

  9. Lucia,

It struck me while reading about St. Lucia that I don’t know how your name should be properly pronounced. Obviously this does not really matter, but for no good reason bothers me. Is your name pronounced ‘loo-CHEE-ah’, ‘LOO-sha’, or ‘loo-SEE-a’, or none of the above / something else?

  10. NYT is reporting that FBI told DNC of hack in Sept. Repeated calls over a week. DNC’s actions were to treat the Podesta e-mail as legit and think the FBI calls were fake.

  11. MikeN, When I read that article it was like reading about the German of the SKS ‘hack’. 🙂 I don’t believe much of it. Nice touch with the DNC file cabinet from the Nixon era. So many inconsistencies… I might delve into it because it’s the NYTimes & apparently fake news is no longer to be tolerated. 😛

  12. sue,

I might delve into it because it’s the NYTimes & apparently fake news is no longer to be tolerated.

    Other people’s fake news anyway.

  13. #1 Not being sure if FBI agent was legit. Are you kidding me? You ask for the agent’s name, then call the FBI and ask for him. Duh. And this apparently went on for weeks.

  14. DeWitt, yes, no, I mean maybe. Depends on what was said and who’s side you’re on. Wait, what were we talking about? Truth! Oh…

  15. Mark Bofill: “It struck me while reading about St. Lucia that I don’t know how your name should be properly pronounced.”

You probably don’t realize it, but your ear for pronunciation would help you greatly in learning Mandarin Chinese. It has 4 tones and for instance, depending on the tone, MaMa could be mother or horse. BaBa could be poop or father.

I have been tutored in Chinese for about 2 months and have not worked nearly hard enough. On the other hand, being familiar with the pronunciations, to some extent, has given me the knowledge that if I work at it I can learn some serviceable Chinese. Before, I thought it would be impossible for me to learn Chinese. Currently, I am learning the alphabet and it seems as if there are 20 Chinese pronunciations of sounds like “c” and “z.”

  16. Sue, if he meant to type illegitimate, that means he intended to write
This is a illegitimate e-mail, not an illegitimate e-mail…

I have the same suspicions about DeflateGate, that perhaps the referee didn’t even check the ball pressures or not as thoroughly as claimed. I very much doubt the statement ‘we never let ballboys take the bag unaccompanied’.

  17. JD Ohio,

BaBa could be poop or father.

I can’t wait to tell my kids this, thank you! 🙂

  18. MikeN, Yup 2 typos, plus ‘must change password ASAP’ for an illegitimate email… rather than delete the email. Makes perfect sense. /s

  19. BTW, I’ve had personal experience of a Detective calling me for info regarding a crime I witnessed a yr earlier. (scared the crap out of me to tell the truth) I explained I needed verification before talking to him. He understood completely, gave his name, gave the front desk number ( which I verified thru 411 (information directory), I’m aging myself…),called that number and asked for him, then spoke to him. This process took about 10 minutes.

The person that NYT is talking about, Yared Tamene, the tech guy contacted by the FBI, hasn’t spoken to them directly, afaict from the article, plus his full name is not disclosed. These “internal memos” shown by NYT are obviously not originals. Not a problem per se, except that the embellishments around them by the authors is not disclosed.

  20. DeWitt, I’m possibly the first to have noticed the issue in that post, courtesy of Brady’s lawyer who caused me to comment on it.
