MoshTemp– new blog.

I just wanted to give a quick shout out for MoshTemp, frequent climate blog commenter Steve Mosher’s new blog. He’s focusing on temperature reconstructions, providing code in R and discussing R issues in general. Welcome to blogging Steve!

  1. A couple of haikus or brownie recipies to spice it up a bit? 🙂
No, his contributions to the climate debate are terriffic. Always looking forward to see what Mosh has to say.

  2. Neils– I’m on a diet. I’ve decided to post diet recipes on my neglected knitting blog. I have a great diet muffin recipe. Seriously doesn’t taste like diet.

I’ve been experimenting with erythritol sugar substitute and konjac. These are weird ingredients, but unlike other sugar substitutes, erythritol has bulk, so you the baked goods don’t end up with a bread texture. But erythritol tends to make baked goods dry. The konjac– which is really weird stuff, tends to help baked goods stay moist. I made a batch of muffins, had people who are not on diets taste them and no one knew they were diet. ( Erythritol is $8 a pound while sugar is, what $0.50/lb? The upshot is, you can have a muffin with 1/2 the calories of normal muffins, but the tradeoff is the ingredients cost more than twice as much. On the other hand, they aren’t expensive compared to bakery muffins.)

Hmmm…. maybe I’d better try diet brownies. . . ( That said, no brownies is even less calories than diet brownies.)

  3. No brownies is even less happiness than brownies. I say go with the brownies.

Back on topic… grats on the new blog Steve. Looking forward to hanging around there.

  4. I made tried a diet chocolate cup-cake recipe. If they turned out great I was going to post. Unfortunately, they were only ok — not sweet enough relative to the amount of cocoa. The recipe needs to be tweaked.

(Banana muffins are excellent though. )

  5. Steve–
I’m not adding bran. I’m mostly trying to just substitute the erythritol for the sugar. Erythritol has 3/4 the sweetness of sugar. Maybe I should have added erythritol + a small amount of sucralose? (Sucralose ads no bulk. The erythritol is already bulky.)

I’ll get this perfected. It just takes a while because I don’t want to make 10,000,000 calories worth of diet treats a day. (The banana muffins were great first try though. Maybe I should have just started with the banana muffin recipe and added cocoa! 🙂 )

  6. Steve–

The chocolate cup cakes aren’t good enough to send to anyone… really. I think Gavin would be bemused to receive a batch of muffins in the mail (and I don’t know his address anyway.)

  7. He’d probably think it was some kind of skeptic-terrorist plot.

I think Gavin wears boxers, which is why he’s always so combative. >zing<

  9. Lucia, I’ll be up your way this weekend… gonna have to make arrangements to messenger a pan of the brownies to my hotel.

  10. Steve–Look for “links” on the left hand of the dashboard. You’ll eventually find them.

MikeC– Western suburbs? Or Chi-town? I’m gonna be in the ‘North Burbs visiting popsie wopsie and big sister. She’s having a big party we’re going to listen to Crosby Stills Nash and Young from her back yard.

  11. I’ve tried to post this on the UAH thread to no avail. Maybe it will work here:
    .
One more nudge upwards and we have another UAH record highest temperature, at least that’s how their ch05 graph that’s stuck on August 16th is looking at the moment.

Yes, the Channel 5 trace for August 2010 looks like it may be headed for a record high for the month of August , but I don’t know if that would be just a record for the month since the year 2002 or earlier, since 2002 is as far back as the the record line on the chart goes.

  13. Since this has expanded to a diet and menu thread, this is not OT. You might place a link to Knitting Fiend/Diet Diary in your blogroll area so that non-regular readers can find links to recipes of banana muffins, diet sorbet and such.

  14. Just do NS. I dropped a lot of weight doing it. The board rock. Yeah…it costs some money and yeah you could do it on your own. But if what you have isn’t getting it done, sign up for an organized program.

And veggies, bulk, veggies, bulk are the way.

throw about 4 servings of veggies (celery, onion, mushroom, pepper, tomato, beans, asparagus, etc.) chopped fine into a Teflon pan that has been Pammed. Steamautee (sautte with lid on) for 5 minuts at 7, (plus the time that you cook as you;re chopping). throw some spices on there. The reduce heat to 4. Pour the carton of eggwhites (1 pint) in there. Steamatuee for 6 minutes. toss the eggs, combine any herbs at this point, cook for another 30-120 seconds (gets any runny remnants).

Pour the whole thing into a big bowl and eat. 350 calories (250 pure protein, 100 veggies). Huge size. Tasty. awesome post lift meal.

Will put hair on your chest.

  15. DonB– If I did that, I’d have to post more recipes! I try to only post when something is good. (I need to make sure the good diet granola is up. The first try was only just ok–more hard than crunchy. I tweaked and the 2nd version is very good (I think anyway.)

    “Youknowwho”–
Interesting (I assume fake) email: “imstillboycottingyou@dietmatters.com”?

  16. Lucia, Monee… too bad there isn’t enough time to put a still together or I’d reflux yaal up something in the 170 range… would be a fair trade for a pan of diet brownies 🙂

In your 51170 comment you said:

Lucia, in a follow-up to her 7/17/10 post on UAH asked Roy Spencer about the UAH Channel 5 data file. Here’s what he told Lucia:

“The record highs and lows are based upon the entire MSU MT record back to 1979. To do this, we intercompared our official UAH TMT product, including the average annual cycle added to the anomalies, with just the Aqua averages over the Aqua period of record since mid-2002. This provided an intercalibration between Aqua-only and UAH official. This then allowed us to go back through and use all of the UAH TMT data to find record highs and lows back through 1979.”

So the maximum, minimum and average values in UAH Channel 5 chart are based on full record, not just since 2002.

I’m tracking daily UAH Channel 5 here.

  18. Who has any new light to shed on the apparent withdrawal of significant amounts of satellite temp data?

  19. hunter, I’d guess that it’s the NOAA 15 data which Dr Roy says has drift issues… but that’s just a guess

    Do you mean Sattelite-gate?

I think there’s something on it at

I’m still trying to picture what Christy said about chasing a lot of rabbits to dead ends.

Well, it *almost* happened. 1998 is still invinceable!
