Auto-banning bots has worked like a charm. But when a blog auto-ban about 400 IPs a day, the number of banned IP’s begins to accumulate. Because ‘bots tend to move around, this means one starts to risk banning an ever increasing number of people while still letting ‘bots through. Over the weekend, I wrote an unbanning script and have now pretty much unbanned most things that had been banned for more than 7 days.

Today, the now unbanned IP=207.61.121.229, “Canada Ottawa Correctional Services Of Canada”, decided to come back. I thought some of some of you Canadian taxpayers might like to see what the “Canada Ottawa Correctional Services Of Canada” is supposedly doing.

Owing to my rules in ‘htaccess’ anything trying to visit a image older than Feb. 2012 gets diverted to an “image-request-processing” script, which processes the request, figures out the IP presented to Cloudflare, logs the hit, decides whether to serve the image. About 15 minutes later a clean-up script detects if too many images were requested and if they are, bans that IP.

In these cases, the IP presented to was 207.61.121.229 and the image was not served.

Unfortunately, the image script did not record the X_forward headers. So, for all I know the originator is on some other IP but is using the Canadian Prison system as a proxy; if the prison’s IT guy ought to fix that. Unfortunately, once one starts detecting these ‘bot, twice or thrice daily effort or looking up each IT guys’ email, writing them etc….. Well, it’s easier to just ban! (I am also going to start diverting requests for old images referred from “/feed” to my auto-banning script because I know anything asking for an image from 2008 and claiming to come from “…./feed” is a bot! I don’t need to wait 15 minutes to ban these stupid image scrapers which, if unbanned, race through… oh… two or three times a day.)

It is not spam because it’s not trying to get anyone to visit anything. It’s also got nothing to do with porn.

This is a badly behaved scraper or crawler. Crawlers request a page, move on to the next, request it, and so on. You can see this does that.

Scrapers almost always crawl and in addition copy everything on the page to store for some reason. In some sense, search engine ‘bots are crawler/scrapers. But the googlebot waits between requests, and identifies itself. If you look at these time stamps, this scraper/crawler asked claims it’s using “Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.590; .NET CLR 3.5.20706; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0C; .NET4.0E; MS-RTC LM 8” which I suspect is a browser. So, it’s telling me it’s not a bot. Then, in addition, it is loading much more stuff than any human would ever use.

Also: I happen to know that my feed page does not have any links to images. So, the fact that it says the referrer is “http://rankexploits.com/musings/feed” means it is lying about where it came from. Total freakin’ lie.

So, it’s badly behaved.

The connection to Correctional Services is that — for some reason, this is connecting using the IP address that is assigned to Canada Ottawa Correctional Services Of Canada. Ordinarily, I’d expect that is either the correctional services server (which should be trying to load my images at all) or a human being sitting at a computer in some prison in Ottawa.

But there is no way a human reading The Blackboard in Ottawa would load all those images that fast.

Among the possibilities:
1) A naughty IT or other employees with skillzzzz at the prison in Ottawa has hijacked his bosses computer to moonlight running an image scraping script.
2) A naughty prisoner with skilllzzzz gets access to a pc, has installed a little script (i.e. program) which periodically runs out trying to scrape images.
3) The IT guy working at the prison in Ottawa has been less than vigilant and his server or someone’s pc has been infected with malware that is running around scraping images. (And btw, this has been going on a while. I blocked the prison system in Ottawa a long time ago. But I unbanned it and it’s back.)
4) Someone hacked the server at the prison and is using it as a proxy. So, they have a script on a pc somewhere, it connects to the server in the prison which then connects to my server.
5) Other.

Now, you might wonder why someone would scrape images. Reasons can range from being in the pay of tineye/picsouct/getty all of whom are hired by copyright holders to find copyright violations to wanting to find images for a group like “picsearch” or “coverscout” who run image searches hoping to sell enough ads to make money. These various groups make some money scraping images– and they don’t necessarily do so in a way that plays nice with the servers whose images they scrape. They don’t play nice because that would involve spending time coding– and that’s not in their business plan.

Other reasons to scrape: It could be personal. Someone wants to take The Blackboard down. This is much less likely than the reason above because a) there are better ways to take the Blackboard down and b) profit motive is always bigger than just being obnoxious.

There could be other reasons.

So then it would be searching for porn, which is different from porn spam which would be leafing porn links. (I get lots of porn referrer spam. If that guy wants to know porn referrers, let me tell you…. Ewhhh!!!)

It really doesn’t matter why they look for stuff. I’ve banned that address from “Canada Ottawa Correctional Services Of Canada”.

Just a quick note that you would want to have mod_cloudflare installed (or equivalent) so original visitor IPs are restored to your server logs. If not, our IPs are going to show in all requests.

I have shared hosting at Dreamhost so I can’t install mod_cloudflare on Apache. To get the correct IP’s, I
* inserted a script call prior to loading wordpress
* pulled the correct IPs out of $_SERVER[“HTTP_CF_CONNECTING_IP”] which you guys pass along and
* recorded the IP that was in $_SERVER[“HTTP_CF_CONNECTING_IP”]. That’s from the Ottawa Correctional Facilities.

I’d love to get correct IPs in the Apache logs, I can’t at my price point for hosting.

Since on every one of the many times I’ve been banned from accessing the Blackboard over the last week the IP address shown by Cloudfare was nothing remotely like my IP address, and was not present anywhere in the route from my ISP to Cloudfare, I’d be very suspicious of anything Cloudfare reports to you at all.

Cloudflare does seem to be making some mistakes. I know it gets most stuff right. It always gets mine right. It always gets all authors right. But I agree it seems to be making a mistake in your case. (And I think it’s doing the same thing to a few other people in the UK. I don’t know why.)

I’m not sure if using mod_cloudflare would make the same mistake. I have no idea what mod_cloudflare does. But the name of the modulre sure looks like it was written by cloudflare, so it seems likely that it would make the same mistake that causes $_SERVER[“HTTP_CF_CONNECTING_IP”] to sometimes be wrong.

That is strange.

I don’t know the reason for the extra “s” in “Service”. It is singular, not plural. That seems fishy to me.

Correctional Service Canada national headquarters is in the city of Ottawa. That part is correct, although there is a Ontario regional headquarters in the city of Kingston.

This is what Correctional Service Canada is:

“The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is the federal government agency responsible for administering sentences of a term of two years or more, as imposed by the courts. CSC is responsible for managing institutions of various security levels and supervising offenders under conditional release in the community.”

There are no CSC institutions (prisons) in Ottawa.

I’ll guess it has to be number 5 on your list of possibilities.

I suppose if you wanted to you could contact CSC and inquire into this:

Did you ever find out what referrer is given when someone loads images in their RSS reader? I haven’t checked since the program I use to monitor/edit requests isn’t compatible with my RSS reader (I think I can create a pipe between the two, but I haven’t dug into the APIs).
