Readers in DuPage county my be interested in this announcement from a politician for whom I will be voting in the upcoming election:
Good afternoon! I hope this note finds you well! I am reaching out to you at the request of Congresswoman Judy Biggert to ask for support of one of our most important Congressional races here in Illinois.
As Congresswoman Biggert prepares to meet former member Bill Foster in the General Election, her race is becoming one of the top races in the Country. As a D+6 district, her new district presents challenges, but also new opportunities. As a social moderate-fiscal conservative Republican woman with a track record of bi-partisan success, Judy is the only one who can keep this district in the GOP hands and prevent Bill Foster for casting his vote for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker. Right now, the polls are tied.
For this reason, I am reaching out to invite you to an event with Congresswoman Biggert on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hugo’s Frog Bar & Fish House, 55 South Main Street, Naperville, IL. Ticket Price is $250.00 per person. Attached is the event flier and response form.
The Biggert-Foster race is one of those races that Nancy Pelosi is counting on to put her back in the Speaker’s chair. Judy Biggert is the only person who can hold this seat, but can only win if she has the resources to do. On behalf of Congresswoman Biggert, thank you for your consideration of this request.
Let me know what you decide. Your generous consideration of this request is appreciated. Thanks,
Meaghan Olsen

I guess Nancy Pelosi is still a motivator, huh?
Don’t think there’s much chance of the D’s taking the house, but whatever works.
you right wing extremist! tell the truth! yu think the earth is flat you knuckle dragging, oil shill. This whole lukerwarmer position is just a ploy to delay the imposition of a tax which is an abomination to your abortion hating, creationist, libertarian, old white guy cabal.
err. sarc off
Boris–
She might be. I happen to like our moderate republican congress woman and would like to see her re-elected. That she might lose if more rightwing republicans fail to show up at the polls an would be a shame. I suspect anti-Nancy sentiment is a motivator for them and those trying to raise funds and votes know it.
Biggert and Foster both attempt to be viewed by the voters as moderates because that is what works best in Chicago suburbs. I do not know what their voting records are. Foster did have a term or two in the US House before losing , I thought in another district. Usually the perception is different than reality with these politicians.
The Democrats in IL were able to redistrict to gain in high probability a few seats for the IL delegation to House. It is interesting that no matter the gerrymandering done in IL it will pass muster with the courts because it does not lessen the influence of minority voters – unless, of course, you were to consider Republicans in IL as a minority.
The Texas Republicans are running into issues with the courts and probably not because they were any more blatant in redistricting than the IL Democrats, but because the courts are attuned to the minority issues as in race and sex – although I am not so sure sex is an issue with these laws.
The Frog Bar is a decent place to dine and drink although not at $250 a setting.
IL politics..yum
I have quite a few relatives who live in the outlaying Chicago bergs. Listening to them go of on the local politics is amusing.
Frog Bar?
The Squid.
(Evidently “cryptic” won’t land you in moderation) 😉

A few key votes:
No to healthcare for poor children. No to abortion rights. No to the stimulus bill. No to action on climate change. No to covering 30 million uninsured Americans.
No thank you.
But I’m sure you’ll have plenty of takers around these parts!
Robert–
You decrees of things like “no to X” may make good sloganeering, but your slogans are either highly misleading or wrong.
The no is not to abortion rights. The no is to the federal government paying for them through subsidies under Obamacare. This would be a non-issue without Obama care which I oppose. Get rid of Obamacare, and that issue goes away. In both cases “rights” remain the same. I’m all for abortion remaining legal. I’m against Obamacare. And, moreover, I do respect the fact that some tax payers don’t want to pay for abortions. In their view, if they are going to subsidize medical care, they would prefer not to pay for that service. That will mean they pay more for maternal care, but I guess that’s their preference. (But this type of traedoff is one of the reasons I don’t like the ‘solution’ presented by Obamacare.)
As for the economic stimulus package: Calling it a stimulus package and hoping it works does not necessarily mean that it is a stimulus package that will work. Notice that the economy is not exactly bouncing back.
Student loans: What precisely would be good about having the feds be the sole provider of student loans?
If your point is Judy is a fiscal conservative who does not support Obamacare and didn’t support or endorse Obama’s ill-conceived keynesian ideas about how to stimulate– yes. She is.
Robert (Comment #103184)
Robert, your sloganeering fits well with the political season in the US, but comes across pretty lame if you wanted a thoughtful discussion on these issues.
Don’t worry Mosher. Her platform is squarely behind investing money in faking more moon landings!
Unfortunately there is more politics in science than there is science in science at this time, and that is sad. However, I have no problem with Lucia promoting an event for a politician she feels is doing a good job and representing her views in Congress. That is the way the American system is SUPPOSED to work (but generally it doesn’t so much anymore).
The student loan law she voted against is perhaps the most indefensible of those votes. The federal government was insuring federal loans up to 97% and letting the banks keep all the interest. It was a complete give away to the big banks that will save taxpayers $47B – $87B (CBO estimate at $47B).
BTW, there are still many non governmental loan programs. It just stops the Stafford and the like federally guaranteed loans from going through private channels.
