Tiny pink hearts bleed;
they remind me of heartache
when furry friends leave.
Jim and I have always planted perennials over our pet’s graves, specifically selecting plants that bloom when our pet left us. I chose this bleeding heart for John Paul Jones. He used to love to hide in the perennial beds. Sometimes, he’s dash out, catch a butterfly and bring the prize too me. We’d make him release it; it would fly away unharmed.
This is an open thread. If you have flower or pet pictures, feel free to share.
Dear Lucia
My wife shares your passion for this plant. In Germany we have a different metapher for it. We call it “tränendes Herz” which should be “crying heart” or perhaps “tear shedding heart” in your language. I like your blog.
Reinhard
Now you’ve done it /sniff/.

Thanks Reinhard. BarryW, Ahh… if our pets could come back. Sigh. . .
We too have a tradition of planting something at our pet’s graves in lieu of a monument. Never considered timing the blooms though- good idea. (unless one dies between December and March here in Michigan) We instead went for the name of the plant species; pussy willow and catmint on the resting places of two of our beloved cats and a Flowering Dogwood at the grave of a departed canine.
